Public Education

-November 2015-

TO: “The Board of Education.”

FROM: William Larsen IIIrd

To whom it may concern,

I often feel cheated by my education and the US public education system.

How egocentric are we as a nation? Particularly when we focus so much of our curriculum today on post Revolutionary War history? And furthermore, how mundane is curriculum that doesn’t even divulge the full history of our land before the European invasion of 1492?

Did 20 million Native Americans not occupy this land before the year 1492? And why is America’s public education system… so devoid of this period in North American history? (A historical period rich in conservation and becoming 1 with nature.)

And yet, with that in mind… it seems obvious to me as to why xenophobia is growing, within our society today. Which then makes me wonder, “are we… so cynical as a nation, so proud as a nation, as to not educate our students on other worldly histories?” And it was Einstein who once said that history is the most important class in general education.

But furthermore, Einstein also said that he himself… was discouraged by the mundane nature of public schools and that henceforth he applauded the importance of imagination over curriculum. And yes, Einstein was taught mostly from European institutions in the late 1800’s, however, his words still echo true today. How is it… that our education system remains stagnant and mundane, decade after decade? Whereby, Science and technology continue to change literally every single year… and yet, our students are still learning in the same monotonous fashion as they were 60 years ago. But how closed minded are we as a nation, as to not evolve the sheer process of learning itself? (Gamification?)

And I can attest from personal experience… that even after attending graduate school I still make grammatical mistakes, literally all of the time. Furthermore, I also believe that this is 100% due to the monotony which has all but derailed American public schools.

And as an American student, only 9 years ago, I can attest that my education was insufficient…

Whereby, the standard practice of; memorization, memorization, and more memorization, taught me almost nothing. And while I will admit that a few of my teachers growing up… did take the time to motivate me, most did not. But furthermore, I also believe that cheating is a major problem within American public schools, today. Whereby, I also believe that this uptick in cheating is an offset of mundane, as well as outdated, public schooling techniques, perhaps even more so than dis-ingenuous pupils.

So to be clear… I believe that cheating is occurring, not because of technology… but because of poorly constructed and stale testing methods, typically based upon memorization. Because it felt so cumbersome…. to memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat…..

And then it felt so cumbersome…. to memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat…..

Which made it feel so cumbersome…. to memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat…..

And it always seemed so monotonous and cumbersome…. to memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat….. memorize and repeat, memorize and repeat…..

So, I hope that this letter is carefully examined by The Board Of Education and given some thought. but also, I believe that this topic is very important to millions of young Americans and that several changes need to be enacted sooner, rather than later. So in conclusion, I believe that at the roots our political system… is The Board Of Education and that this education system has some obligation to keep young people involved in politics. Nevertheless, in conclusion I believe that for these reasons it would be almost unforgivable to corrode another generation, in the same way as my generation was corroded, through mundane public education / teaching methods.

Thank you for your time.
